Gate opens for Dave’s victory
PROSERPINE golfer Dave Gates produced a round of 39 to win the weekend’s 18-hole stableford.
With two teams of players away competing in the regional finals of the Holden Shootout, a reduced field of 32 men and six ladies took part on Saturday.
Gates carded 39 to beat runner-up Perri Simpson (38) – who finished second on a countback from Vic Feldman.
In the rundown were Michael Cragg, Gary Scotford (37), Theunis Venter, Rob Stanley, Trevor Paroz, Lance Lloyd (36), Peter Krause, Peter Lewis and Peter Fox (35).
The ladies winner was Elspeth Scotford with 36, finishing ahead of Mandy Patterson (33).
Nearest-the-pins went to Jim Dowell (no. 2 and 13), Mandy Patterson, Gary Scotford (9) and Greg Walker (16).
The two-shot club was shared by Paula Wronski, who birdied 13, and Rob Stanley.
On Thursday 60 players turned out for a stroke event in two divisions over 18 and nine-holes.
Winner of division 1 was Michael Ward who carded 63 to finish ahead of Mick Burrows (64).
Wally Reintals pipped Brendan Meharry on a countback to claim division 2 after both players finished on 63.
Brian Smith, Pascal Neunreuther, Vic Feldman (68), Wayne Temby, Trevor Paroz (69) and Darren Jones (70) finished in the ball rundown.
The division 2 rundown comprised Tom Fleming (64), Steve Barry (65), Jim Cochrane, Joe Taylor (66), Jim Dowell and Mark Thompson (67).
The nine-hole competition was claimed by Brendan Meharry, who won on a countback from Bill Jesser on 31.
Wally Reintals (31.5), Gavin Noonan, Ken Wyllie, Steve Barry (32), Mark Thompson and Joe Taylor (32.5) finished in the ball rundown.
Nearest-the-pins went to Simon Dobbins (2), Bill Jesser (9), Lance Lloyd (13) and Jim Dowell (16).
This week Saturday players will contest the Monthly Hotel Metropole Stableford while Thursday’s field will fight out a stableford in two divisions.
Tee times are available from 7.30am on both days but those interested are urged to register at the pro shop.
Last Sunday the Dawnies took on the back nine.
Beryl Nosworthy was ultimately pronounced the winner, after she finished in a three-way tie on 48 with Ted Evans and Mark Cohen.
Nearest-the-pins went to Bruce Upchurch (13) and Mick Burrows (16) while Beryl Nosworthy won the snake putter competition.
The least number of putts went to Jock Anderson (13) while Paul Grace won the Bradman (65/65).
This Sunday the Dawnies’ round will be followed by a barbecue.
Last Tuesday the ladies contested a two-ball ambrose, with a competitive field of 21 enjoying perfect conditions.
Mandy Patterson and Jenny Hounsell won the day with 69.75 while Tiina Randmae and Toni Clauss finished second with 70.5 ahead of Jenny Hounsell and Marlene Gray on a countback.
Beryl Nosworthy won a chip-in for her effort on no. 13 while Mandy Patterson and Jenny Hounsell (3), Tiina Randmae and Toni Clauss (14) and Bernice Petersen and Sue Smith (11) each claimed nearest-the-pins.
Next week the ladies will host a single stableford before the McNeill Monthly Medal takes place on November 5.
