Whitsunday weightlifters to represent Queensland
TWO Whitsunday weightlifters have been named in the state team to tackle nationals next month.
Whitsunday Weightlifting Club members Leanne Knox and Matt Warren will travel to Melbourne for the November 28-30 championships, representing Queensland in the 63kg and 77kg divisions.
The two locals were picked based on their national rankings from competitions throughout the year, with just seven lifters picked in each category.
The achievement means the regional club boasts three state representatives – remarkable considering the Whitsunday Weightlifting started only a year ago.
Knox said she jumped ship to weightlifting when she dis- covered the intricacies involved in the sport. “I got into it [competitive weightlifting] through CrossFit. I did a level 1 coaching but I decided I needed to be a good Olympic weightlifting coach if I wanted to be a good CrossFit coach,” Knox said.
“After a few sessions I decided I liked weightlifting more than CrossFit.”
Knox, who has been competitively weightlifting for a year, said she was happy with her preparation for next month’s national titles.
Her training will intertwine with the JME Club Challenge – a state-wide event held at different centres throughout Queensland. The challenge will see Townsville and Mackay weightlifting clubs compete in the Whitsundays.
