Weightlifter Chelsea lifts silver medal
CHELSEA Nicoll has muscled her way to silver at the Australian Weightlifting Federation’s national under-17 championships.
The Whitsunday Weightlifting Club member finished second in her 48kg division at the Launceston-based titles earlier this month.
The 16-year-old lifted 33kg in the snatch category and a 42kg clean and jerk.
“I was happy with what I was lifting. I was expecting second because of where I am in the rankings,” she said.
“But I was happy with how I did, even though I didn’t get gold.” The Whitsunday Christian College student was initially a CrossFit athlete before she decided to give weightlifting a try, under the guidance of Whitsunday coach Leanne Knox.
Chelsea concedes weightlifting isn’t the most common competitive sport, but she praised it for how rewarding the results feel.
“It’s hard to explain, I like the competitiveness of it,” she said. “You get the feeling you achieve a lot. You can come to training tired but you can still get PBs. That’s an exciting feeling.”
Chelsea, who trains three or four times a week, says she is already looking forward to next year’s national titles.
