Reef Threats

Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY NEWS AND VIEWS -

In order to protect the Great Barrier Reef, the Queensland government has proposed to dump millions of tonnes of dredge spoil on a tidal wetland next to a turtle breeding ground in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area… without any proper environmental assessment. Insanity. We can only hope that Greg Hunt, our Federal Minister for the Environment does the right thing and demand a proper Environmental Impact Assessment for the dumping of dredge spoils in the Caley Valley Wetlands at Abbot Point.

When will the government learn what every school child in Australia knows, the health of the Great Barrier Reef is dependent on the health of the reef system which includes our coastal wetlands.

You impact the wetlands, you impact the reef. It is really that simple. Tony Fontes AIRLIE BEACH
