Busy year for Air Force Cadets
AIR Force cadets from the local 110 Squadron celebrated their 2014 training year at a ‘dining in night’ hosted by the Reef Gateway Hotel on Saturday.
The cadets aged between 13 and 20 have participated in numerous exciting activities throughout the year including a week-long visit to Royal Australian Air Force Base Garbutt in Townsville and an adventure challenge weekend at the Kinchant Outdoor Education Centre (KOEC).
The squadron’s commanding officer, Flying Officer (AAFC) Adam Bradley, said some of this year’s highlights included a half-hour trial instructional flight in a Cessna aircraft, paid for by the Australian Defence Force, and a sea-coast bivouac (bush camp) where all 31 cadets got to fly over a property at Yeates Creek, courtesy of Helibiz Whitsunday. During Saturday’s dinner and as part of military tradition, the squadron conducted a ‘Kangaroo Court’ where members could place ‘charges’ against their fellow cadets for incidents and funny moments throughout the year. Some of the ‘sentences’ given out included having to do the Chicken Dance or sing ‘I’m a Little Teapot’ in front of fellow cadets and pa- rents attending the dinner.
Flying Officer Bradley said it was good for the cadets to have some fun on this formal occasion and everybody had a laugh.
“Some great stories always come out on events like these, which entertain the parents so they can see what a great time their children have in the Australian Air Force Cadets,” he said. Flying Officer Bradley said the squadron’s 2015 schedule was looking very busy, with plans for the cadets to attend the Avalon Airshow in Melbourne early in the year. Other activities planned include an archery introductory activity and a seacoast survival week during one of the school holidays.
The squadron is now re- cruiting cadets and adult staff until the end of 2014. For more information visit www.aafc.org.au, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 4786 1426.
