Back­packer busi­nesses up for awards

FIVE lo­cal tourism op­er­a­tors are among fi­nal­ists for the 2014 Golden Back­pack Awards.

Base Back­pack­ers Air­lie Beach / Base Travel Air­lie Beach / Down Un­der Bar Air­lie Beach (one business), Awe­some Whit­sun­days, True Blue Sail­ing, Whit­sun­days Sail­ing Ad­ven­tures and Air­liebeach.com, are all in the run­ning for awards, while the Great Bar­rier Reef has been nom­i­nated as Best Vis­i­tor At­trac­tion – Aus­tralia and the Whit­sun­days nom­i­nated for Best City/Re­gion – Aus­tralia.

More than 76,000 votes have been re­ceived for the awards, which recog­nise cus­tomer ser­vice ex­cel­lence in the in­de­pen­dent travel sec­tor.

Whit­sun­days Mar­ket­ing and De­vel­op­ment Limited (WMDL) Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor, Jeff Aquilina, said he was ex­cited that the Whit­sun­days had such strong rep­re­sen­ta­tion.

“The Whit­sun­days is world-fa­mous for its nat­u­ral won­ders and it is great to see that our busi­nesses are be­ing re­warded for their hard work in mak­ing the vis­i­tor ex­pe­ri­ences stand out,” he said.

“The youth mar­ket con­tin­ues to be of im­mense im­por­tance to the re­gion and the votes show that the Whit­sun­days is an ab­so­lutely favourite for back­pack­ers to Aus­tralia.”

Whit­sun­days Sail­ing Ad­ven­tures Sales and Mar­ket­ing Man­ager, Gabby Shaw, said the company was once again proud to be a fi­nal­ist for a Golden Back­packer Award.

“The awards have now been run­ning for over 19 years and it is an hon­our to be up there with the best ad­ven­ture op­er­a­tors in the Whit­sun­days and Queens­land,” she said.

The 2014 Golden Back­pack Awards will be held in Syd­ney on Novem­ber 6.
