Backpacker businesses up for awards
FIVE local tourism operators are among finalists for the 2014 Golden Backpack Awards.
Base Backpackers Airlie Beach / Base Travel Airlie Beach / Down Under Bar Airlie Beach (one business), Awesome Whitsundays, True Blue Sailing, Whitsundays Sailing Adventures and Airliebeach.com, are all in the running for awards, while the Great Barrier Reef has been nominated as Best Visitor Attraction – Australia and the Whitsundays nominated for Best City/Region – Australia.
More than 76,000 votes have been received for the awards, which recognise customer service excellence in the independent travel sector.
Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) Executive Director, Jeff Aquilina, said he was excited that the Whitsundays had such strong representation.
“The Whitsundays is world-famous for its natural wonders and it is great to see that our businesses are being rewarded for their hard work in making the visitor experiences stand out,” he said.
“The youth market continues to be of immense importance to the region and the votes show that the Whitsundays is an absolutely favourite for backpackers to Australia.”
Whitsundays Sailing Adventures Sales and Marketing Manager, Gabby Shaw, said the company was once again proud to be a finalist for a Golden Backpacker Award.
“The awards have now been running for over 19 years and it is an honour to be up there with the best adventure operators in the Whitsundays and Queensland,” she said.
The 2014 Golden Backpack Awards will be held in Sydney on November 6.
