Whitsunday bodybuilder wins big in Sydney
THE Whitsundays can lay claim to one of the country’s leading bodybuilders.
Hayley Henneberry competed at the International Natural Bodybuilding Association’s (INBA) Muscle and Model Fitness Show in Sydney last weekend, bringing home wins in the Figure and Figure International categories before progressing to the finals to claim the Overall Figure Champion.
Remarkably it was the first time the 33-year-old had competed in the two categories, yet she was still good enough to win and subsequently qualify for the INBA Southern Cross Championships in Melbourne next year.
The Cannonvale resident said she was shocked to do so well.
“I was pretty amazed, I couldn’t believe it,” she said.
“I’d only been training for a short amount of time and the competitors I was up against were phenomenal.”
Henneberry has been training for two-and-a-half years but only started entering competitions this year.
Since then she has also tasted success at the INBA Tropics in Townsville, where she won her section in the Fitness Model competition.
Competitive bodybuilding isn’t the most common sport and originally it wasn’t even Henneberry’s first preference.
“I had just had my daughter so I had hip and back problems which meant I couldn’t run,” she said.
“I used to do triathlons and marathons but I wanted something less wearing on my body.”
Henneberry trains six times a week in preparation for competition, consisting of five weight sessions and one cardio workout.
She says the training is something she relishes but the diet can be challenging.
However the silver lining is that following a strict regime has taught her how to cook healthy meals with little fuss.
Henneberry’s sights are now set on next year’s Southern Cross Championships in Melbourne.
If successful, she could see herself competing at the Elite Pro World Championships in Dubai.
“I’ve got my work cut out for me but I’m working on my conditioning to come in strong,” she said.
“That [getting to Dubai] would be a dream come true.”
