Athletics club tops off memorable season
THE Whitsunday Athletics Club took to Hamilton Island to officially wrap-up its 2014 season at the weekend.
Families enjoyed mini-golf, kayaking, face-painting and jumping castles on Saturday, while guest athlete and Commonwealth Games high jumper Brandon Starc proved a hit, delighting crowds with his jumps.
Overall it was a successful year for the club, which saw the Hamilton Island branch rise to 52 members, on top of the mainland’s 77.
Whitsunday Athletics Club spokesperson Steve Jackson said the presence of Starc would enable the club to grow further. “Starc spoke of how he began in athletics at age five, but failed to excel or specialise until he was 15, but within a year he was a Youth Olympics silver medallist in high jump,” Jackson said.
“Starc demonstrated some of his skills and answered questions from the curious onlookers on everything from technique to what he has for breakfast.” Starc also aided the presentations, while life member paid tribute to firstyear president Nathan Sainsbury for his efforts.
Whitsunday Athletics Club days will resume in April 2015.
