Council’s cyclone video is a Queensland first
WHITSUNDAY Regional Council has become the first council in Queensland to make a video informing the public about cyclone shelters.
The video, produced by Council in conjunction with local disaster management company QIT Plus, and provides vital information for visitors and residents of the Whitsunday region about the cyclone shelters in Bowen and Proserpine. Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the video reiterated the safest and most comfortable option for most people during a severe weather event was to shelter at their home or with friends and family. She said the vi- deo explained the last option available to people unable to leave the warning area was sheltering at one of the public cyclone shelters – at the Bowen State High School on Richmond Road, or the Proserpine State School on Sterry Street.
Cr Whitney said cyclone shelters were short-term options during severe weather events, with evacuation and recovery centres established for people requiring longer term accommodation.
