Solid weekend of sailing for Navy cadets
FIFTEEN of the Whitsunday Navy Cadets took advantage of the weekend’s great weather to pack in two solid sailing sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
NTS Whitsunday Commanding Officer, Sub Lieutenant James Lang, said the cadets based themselves out of Flametree Caravan Park for their weekend camp, which they set up on Friday afternoon.
“It’s a fantastic location allowing the cadets to camp under canvas and be fully selfsufficient in terms of things like refrigeration and feeding themselves,” he said.
On Saturday morning the cadets and staff were up bright and early for their first sailing session of the weekend, launching the unit’s two Corsairs at Shingley Beach and heading off to explore the bay between Pigeon Island and Abell Point Marina.
With the exception of a break for lunch under the shady trees at Shingley Park, the cadets spent a total of six hours in the water, practising sailing to and fro and learning the aspects of different positions on the jib and main sheets and at the helm.
Sub Lt Lang said thanks to the generosity of management at the Abell Point Marina, the cadets were able to leave the Corsairs fully rigged and berthed for the night, while they returned to camp for some well earned rest.
“After an extended day of being out on the water everybody was quite happy to turn in reasonably early after a nice solid barbeque dinner,” he said.
Sunday was another early morning start, with the cadets spending three hours on the water and Sub Lt Lang leading a one-on-one training session with a member of staff.
At the end of the weekend Sub Lt Lang said everyone had “thoroughly enjoyed themselves”.
“And they can’t wait for the next camp,” he said.
The next camp is a weekend at TS Pioneer in Mackay from March 20-22.
In the meantime cadets will meet for their normal Friday parade tomorrow night and a sailing session next Saturday, March 14.
