Pre-season carnival to kick-start year
SPORT fans are in for a treat on March 7 with 10 hours of AFL set to take over the Whitsunday Sportspark for the Sea Eagles’ pre-season carnival.
The tournament is an annual tradition for the club which has been embraced by Mackay AFL and beyond.
This year, 15 teams will take part in the pre-season hit-out, including a record five women’s teams.
The usual teams from Mackay AFL, including City Hawks, Eastern Swans, North Mackay Saints, Moranbah Bulldogs, Bakers Creek Tigers and Magpies, will be joined by the Rockhampton Panthers, the Townsville City Lions and the Thuringowa Bulldogs in the men’s competition, while the female teams will be represented by Bakers Creek, Moranbah, Swans, Saints and Magpies of Mackay. The overall winners of the day will pocket $600 and the coveted preseason trophy.
For the Sea Eagles it’s a chance to raise much-needed funds for the club, with a new stretcher atop the club’s wish list.
A variety of raffles will be held throughout the day with prizes including trips with Cruise Whitsundays, football memorabilia and meat trays.
Free buses will also be operating between Cannonvale and the Whitsunday Sportspark throughout the day, which will run from 8.30am right through until 6.30pm.
