Warriors hunted down by Valleys

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

VALLEYS have gunned down Warriors in a high-scoring Proserpine Cricket Association duel at the weekend.

Batting first, Warriors were put on the back foot thanks to some lively bowling from Josh Dyke (2/45) and Cohen Crocker (1/37).

The pair reduced Warriors to just 2/22 before David Vickers (37) steadied the ship.

Scott Hardy (1/33) removed Vickers, which saw Hayden Russell and Shane Knight unite at the wicket. The pair put on a sublime 96-run partnership, with Russell particularly belligerent in his innings of 92.

Knight notched a fine half-century but Warriors’ momentum would be stalled by Rhys Morgans, who finished with 2/45.

In reply to Warriors’ 226 all out, Valleys started briskly, led by Bowen pair Crocker (36) and Morgans.

Vickers kept Valleys alive with 3/33, including the scalps of Hardy (28) and Zane Smith (36), but it was Warriors’ Morgans who was doing the damage.

He posted a sturdy 69 before falling to wily veteran Craig Brown (1/23), leaving 29 required from seven overs with just two wickets in hand and time running out.

Josh Dyke (15 not out) and Dale Mengel (11 not out) secured the victory with less than five minutes to spare before the 6pm cut-off.

This week Valleys will play Canecutters from 12.30pm at the Kelsey Creek Cricket Grounds.

Both teams are in need of players, so those interested are urged to attend.
