Raiders test themselves in Townsville
AHEAD of their first game of the season next weekend the Whitsunday Raiders enjoyed their first hit-out of the pre-season last weekend.
The Mackay and Districts Rugby Union reigning premiers of the past two years travelled to Townsville on Saturday to play four quarters against Townsville’s Teachers West.
“It was hard to get everyone to commit but we got a team out there and everyone was pretty keen for a game, especially during the pre-season,” Raiders’ Ron Croker said.
“It was good to see everyone’s fitness and to see how the team is looking. It was good to see how the senior players worked with team and [I was] impressed with a few.”
Croker was named best back for the day while club president Matt Sammut won the best forward award.
The Mackay and Districts Rugby Union fixture is yet to be confirmed for 2015, but the Raiders are expected to begin their campaign on March 14 in Mackay against City Redskins.
Before that grand final replay, Whitsunday is hoping to “get our set pieces together”, according to Croker.
To achieve that the Raiders will host a game of beach rugby this weekend.
“Everyone’s invited and we are still trying to recruit more players,” Croker said.
“We’ve got two grades going this year so there are plenty of opportunities and we’re looking for anyone who’s interested.” The Whitsunday Raiders train at the Whitsunday Sportspark every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm.
