Road trip proves we’re ‘closer than you think’
TOWNSVLLE residents are being reminded that the Whitsundays are ‘closer than you think’ via a new major marketing campaign.
On Friday, about 40 ‘ambassadors’, selected by Townsville car dealers in partnership with Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL), left Townsville on a road trip to the Whitsundays to experience for themselves the close proximity of the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach.
WMDL Executive Director, Jeff Aquilina, said the idea behind the trip was for the ambassadors to ‘road test’ some of the incredible experiences on offer just a stone’s throw away from home.
“We really want to show our neighbours that the experiences on offer are endless, from swimming in the crystal clear waters [and] relaxing at the magnificent beaches to indulging in delicious food and wine,” Mr Aquilina said.
“In just two hours, you will reach the top of the Whitsundays [where] the award-winning beaches in Bowen and azure blue waters of the Whitsundays will make you feel a million miles away,” he said.
“The Whitsundays really is closer than you think and the ideal destination to spend some much-needed quality time with family and friends.”
The campaign, which is an initiative of WMDL and supported through Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), has been welcomed at the highest levels.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Kate Jones, described it as a “terrific initiative...set to inspire Townsville residents to take advan- tage of the spectacular tourism experiences on offer just a short drive from home”.
“The Queensland Government, through TEQ, is proud to support campaigns like this because they support tourism and a strong tourism industry means jobs in the region,” Ms Jones said.
“The Whitsundays is a globally recognised tourism destination and its visitor experiences are within reach of many Queenslanders.”
The campaign, including a range of great deals and offers, runs from March 6-31. For more information visit www.closerthanyouthink.com.au.
