Road trip proves we’re ‘closer than you think’

TOWNSVLLE res­i­dents are be­ing re­minded that the Whit­sun­days are ‘closer than you think’ via a new ma­jor mar­ket­ing cam­paign.

On Fri­day, about 40 ‘am­bas­sadors’, se­lected by Townsville car deal­ers in part­ner­ship with Whit­sun­days Mar­ket­ing and Devel­op­ment Limited (WMDL), left Townsville on a road trip to the Whit­sun­days to ex­pe­ri­ence for them­selves the close prox­im­ity of the Whit­sun­days and Air­lie Beach.

WMDL Ex­ec­u­tive Direc­tor, Jeff Aquilina, said the idea be­hind the trip was for the am­bas­sadors to ‘road test’ some of the in­cred­i­ble ex­pe­ri­ences on of­fer just a stone’s throw away from home.

“We re­ally want to show our neigh­bours that the ex­pe­ri­ences on of­fer are end­less, from swim­ming in the crys­tal clear wa­ters [and] re­lax­ing at the mag­nif­i­cent beaches to in­dulging in de­li­cious food and wine,” Mr Aquilina said.

“In just two hours, you will reach the top of the Whit­sun­days [where] the award-win­ning beaches in Bowen and azure blue wa­ters of the Whit­sun­days will make you feel a mil­lion miles away,” he said.

“The Whit­sun­days re­ally is closer than you think and the ideal des­ti­na­tion to spend some much-needed qual­ity time with fam­ily and friends.”

The cam­paign, which is an ini­tia­tive of WMDL and sup­ported through Tourism and Events Queens­land (TEQ), has been wel­comed at the high­est lev­els.

Min­is­ter for Tourism and Ma­jor Events, Kate Jones, de­scribed it as a “ter­rific ini­tia­tive...set to in­spire Townsville res­i­dents to take ad­van- tage of the spec­tac­u­lar tourism ex­pe­ri­ences on of­fer just a short drive from home”.

“The Queens­land Gov­ern­ment, through TEQ, is proud to sup­port cam­paigns like this be­cause they sup­port tourism and a strong tourism in­dus­try means jobs in the re­gion,” Ms Jones said.

“The Whit­sun­days is a glob­ally recog­nised tourism des­ti­na­tion and its vis­i­tor ex­pe­ri­ences are within reach of many Queens­lan­ders.”
