Dis­as­ter group seeks vol­un­teers

THE Whit­sun­day Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Group (WDMG) is look­ing for vol­un­teer emer­gency li­ai­son of­fi­cers in 13 com­mu­ni­ties across the lo­cal coun­cil area.

In­cluded in th­ese com­mu­ni­ties are the sub­urbs of Dingo Beach and Hy­de­away Bay, Con­way Beach and Wil­sons Beach, Lethe­brook, Shute Har­bour and Kelsey Creek.

Mayor and WDMG chair Jen­nifer Whit­ney said the vol­un­teers would be the point of con­tact within th­ese smaller com­mu­ni­ties dur­ing a dis­as­ter event or emer­gency op­er­a­tion.

“Dur­ing a dis­as­ter event or emer­gency op­er­a­tion we need on the ground lo­cal in­for­ma­tion about what is hap­pen­ing and what is needed in th­ese lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties,” she said.

“Emer­gency li­ai­son of­fi­cers will be able to pro­vide this valu­able in­for­ma­tion di­rectly to the WDMG so that our re­sponse and re­cov­ery dur­ing a dis­as­ter event can be more ef­fi­cient and tar­geted.”

Ap­pli­cants need to live within one of the 13 com­mu­ni­ties iden­ti­fied and should ide­ally have knowl­edge of Queens­land dis­as­ter man­age­ment ar­range­ments and al­ready be an ac­tive mem­ber of a vol­un­teer or­gan­i­sa­tion such as the State Emer­gency Ser­vice, Ru­ral Fire Brigade, Vol­un­teer Marine Res­cue or a lo­cal progress as­so­ci­a­tion.

Coun­cil will pro­vide the suc­cess­ful ap­pli­cants with train­ing as re­quired.
