Disaster group seeks volunteers
THE Whitsunday Disaster Management Group (WDMG) is looking for volunteer emergency liaison officers in 13 communities across the local council area.
Included in these communities are the suburbs of Dingo Beach and Hydeaway Bay, Conway Beach and Wilsons Beach, Lethebrook, Shute Harbour and Kelsey Creek.
Mayor and WDMG chair Jennifer Whitney said the volunteers would be the point of contact within these smaller communities during a disaster event or emergency operation.
“During a disaster event or emergency operation we need on the ground local information about what is happening and what is needed in these local communities,” she said.
“Emergency liaison officers will be able to provide this valuable information directly to the WDMG so that our response and recovery during a disaster event can be more efficient and targeted.”
Applicants need to live within one of the 13 communities identified and should ideally have knowledge of Queensland disaster management arrangements and already be an active member of a volunteer organisation such as the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Brigade, Volunteer Marine Rescue or a local progress association.
Council will provide the successful applicants with training as required.
Applications for the positions opened this week and interested people can apply online via Council’s erecruit website https:// erecruit1.mercury.com.au/whitsunday.
