High hopes for weekend cruise

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

ABOUT 10 boats and at least twice as many crew are expected to hit the water this coming weekend for the Abell Point Yacht Club’s (APYC) first cruise in company to Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island.

APYC media officer Luke McCaul said with Cyclone Nathan heading towards the far north Queensland coast, the committee were certainly keeping a weather eye.

“All the arrangements are the same, however we will be checking the weather on Friday to confirm the go ahead of the event,” he said.

“If we get adverse wind and rain, the cruise will be cancelled and members will be invited down to Sorrento’s on Saturday afternoon for Sundowners on the deck.”

Mr McCaul and the other enthusiastic members of the APYC are nonetheless hoping the cyclone stays clear, with nothing to interrupt this highly anticipated social event.

“The hope is that all members will mingle, share stories, have a great time and share their experiences with the community to promote more members,” Mr McCaul said.

“[And] the more the merrier.”

Skippers on vessels wishing to depart together, can leave the Abell Point Marina at about 2pm on Saturday and cruise out to Cid Harbour at their own pace.

The cost to attend is $20 per boat for APYC members and $30 per boat for nonmembers.
