Runners to head for the hills
REGISTRATIONS are now open as preparations for the Stamford Financial Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon are well underway.
Now in its ninth year, the Hilly Half Marathon has developed a reputation as one of Queensland’s most stunning yet challenging courses.
Falling early in the running season, the Hilly Half, and the training that comes with it, can set competitors up for a fast year.
“The strength gains that can be made by training on the trails and hills early in the year help runners build their endurance and prevent injuries. So as we move to the flatter events, they can hold their speed better while other runners fade,” race director Steve Jackson said.
To be held on Sunday, May 3, the Hilly Half Marathon also provides other options to cater for various abilities and age groups.
Comprised of three 7km legs, the team event is consistently popular among participants while there’s also a junior option which includes 500m, 1.5km or 3km distances.
The Hilly Half forms part of the new Hamilton Island Endurance Series, also including the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim, Clash of the Paddles, Fujifilm Triathlon and Great Whitehaven Beach Run.
