IT WAS as tough a test Mackay and District Rugby League can present but the Brahmans came away from the weekend’s pre-season loss to Souths Sharks full of optimism.

Whitsunday travelled to Mackay on Saturday for their final practice game of the year ahead of next week’s season opener.

The Brahmans rested 17 Agrade players in the mixed Agrade/reserve game, enabling coach Anthony Blackwood to test his squad’s depth and trial positional experiments.

Although the scoreboard reflected a 52-6 loss, coach Blackwood was pleased with the effort the young men produced against a formidable opponent.

He conceded there was plenty of work to be done in the coming two weeks, but lauded the play of English recruit Alex Clare and Kieran Anderson in the halves.

The club now has three training sessions before their first game of the season against last year’s grand finalists in Wests Tigers. In other news, the under-18s also had a chance to test themselves against worthy opponents.
