Coral trout and barramundi around
The fringing reefs around the islands have been seeing some really good coral trout being caught over the past week.
Anglers are also landing plenty of grassy sweetlip and blue bone in the area.
Abell Point rock walls are fishing well with some very nice grunter being caught on peeled prawns.
Flathead are also in the area with soft plastics being your best bet for bait. Live bait under a float is working well for nice size queen fish and giant trevally.
The marina mouths are still producing nicely for barramundi after dark.
The outer part of the islands including Dolphin Point, Edward Island and Mackerel Bay are getting really nice spanish mackerel.
Try using live fusiliers with the best bet being to set them deep.
A few black jewfish are also start- ing to get around Long Island and Whitsunday Passage at night.
Bob Spees Whitsunday Fishing World ■ RIVER During the small tide period late last week and over the weekend there were some good catches of both barramundi and king fish on live bait and on lures.
The best live bait is prawns and preferably mullet if you can find them.
Lures and soft vibes are getting bites trolling the river.
There’s also still a few grunter around the river mouth on the rocks just up from the boat ramp which can be targeted on normal dead bait.
Not too much has changed in the dam of late with plenty of barramundi still hanging around in the shallow weeds.
The problem is getting them to play the game.
Persistence is the key with bites being few and far between.
The odd fish is being caught on surface lures in the low light times, with a few also landed working the edges of the weed with shallow diving hard bodied lures and soft plastics.
There are fish being caught trolling the open basin as well.
The new moon coming up this weekend will mean the real early mornings and late afternoons will be the best times to get out there.
