Leave it in the ground
THREE statistics emerged as being of paramount importance in last week’s Guardian Australia ‘ leave it in the ground’ campaign - 2 degrees Celsius; the threshold for dangerous climate warming; 565 gigatons of carbon : this would bring the increase in the Earth’s temperature up to that two degrees Celsius; 2795 gigatons; if all the fossil fuels already located were to be burnt then this would be the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.
It would be absolutely catastrophic.
And yet mining companies are still searching for even more reserves of fossil fuels with the help of government subsidies.
Global warming did not even rate a mention in the federal government ‘s intergenerational report. Can anyone imagine a worse legacy to hand down to our grandkids?
