Champion for remote wellbeing

Whitsunday Times - - LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD -

SINCE opening in 2013, Sybella Health principal consultant and psychologist Christine Franklin has taken pride in lending a hand.

She launched the Whitsundays Depression and Anxiety Treatment Clinic which provides a specialist service to adults experiencing challenges associated with anxiety and depression.

Ms Franklin says that recent research has highlighted the increasing burden imposed by mental health problems and disorders in the Whitsunday community.

Everyday problems such as work stress, relationship troubles and coping with illness can seriously affect your life.

“Addressing these concerns is vital to enjoying life and good relationships,” she said.

A nationally registered Psychologist with 20 years of experience working with individuals and communities to bring about positive change, Ms Franklin is passionate about rural health and a champion of service equity.

While rates of mental health illness do not vary much across the country, Ms Franklin says about 20 percent of Australians have had a mental health problem in the past 12 months and that the Medicare expenditure per person is much lower in rural and remote areas.

“Tragically, suicide rates are also higher in rural and remote areas than they are in major cities,” she said.

“Rural communities deserve a more equitable share of health funding.”

Ms Franklin will be a delegate at the National Rural Health Conference in Darwin in May as a Queensland representative on the Friends Advisory Council for the Rural Health Alliance where she is happy to represent locals in their concerns or solutions surrounding rural health matters.

She encourages local community members to visit the Facebook page Whitsundays De- pression and Anxiety Treatment Clinic for regular updates on how to maintain positive mental health.

The Whitsundays Depression and Anxiety Treatment Clinic is located Suite 2 Whitsunday Place, 1 Abell Road Cannonvale.
