Junior Sea Eagles ready for NQ’s best
THE Whitsunday Sportspark will host the best under-16 AFL prospects in North Queensland this weekend, with four Sea Eagles particularly hopeful of shining.
Sam Cornish, Rhys Furhmann, Maty Jenkins and Mi- chael Maltby will represent the Mackay under-16 team when the North Queensland Championships starts tomorrow.
Originally eight Whitsunday players were selected in the 23-man squad; however Jacob Healey, Zane Kennedy, Hudson McGregor and La- chlan Spinner were forced to withdraw due to injury and unavailability.
Sam, Rhys, Maty and Michael are confident local knowledge will help Mackay, but particularly themselves as they hone their skills weekly at ‘The Nest’ and understand the difficulties the wind can produce.
Mackay’s first game will be against Cape York tomorrow from 4pm, with matches against Townsville (Saturday at 10am), Capricornia (Saturday at noon) and Cairns (Sunday at 10am) to follow.
Maty Jenkins, 15 Position: Midfield Style: Midfielder who strong overhead. "We’ve played on the ground a lot more so we know which way the wind blows and where the ground dips."
Michael Maltby, 16 Position: Full back Style: Fast, tall defender "We know the ground better than other teams and we know the positives and negatives of it."
Sam Cornish, 16 Position: Wing/midfield Style: Run and carry "Knowing the ground makes us comfortable and will help us relax."
Rhys Fuhrmann, 15 Position: Midfield Style: In-and-under midfielder "We play here all the time so we know the ground well."
