Ju­nior Sea Ea­gles ready for NQ’s best

THE Whit­sun­day Sportspark will host the best un­der-16 AFL prospects in North Queens­land this week­end, with four Sea Ea­gles par­tic­u­larly hope­ful of shin­ing.

Sam Cor­nish, Rhys Furhmann, Maty Jenk­ins and Mi- chael Maltby will rep­re­sent the Mackay un­der-16 team when the North Queens­land Cham­pi­onships starts to­mor­row.

Orig­i­nally eight Whit­sun­day play­ers were se­lected in the 23-man squad; how­ever Ja­cob Healey, Zane Kennedy, Hud­son McGre­gor and La- chlan Spin­ner were forced to with­draw due to in­jury and un­avail­abil­ity.

Sam, Rhys, Maty and Michael are con­fi­dent lo­cal knowl­edge will help Mackay, but par­tic­u­larly them­selves as they hone their skills weekly at ‘The Nest’ and un­der­stand the dif­fi­cul­ties the wind can pro­duce.

Mackay’s first game will be against Cape York to­mor­row from 4pm, with matches against Townsville (Satur­day at 10am), Capri­cor­nia (Satur­day at noon) and Cairns (Sun­day at 10am) to fol­low.

Maty Jenk­ins, 15 Po­si­tion: Mid­field Style: Mid­fielder who strong over­head. "We’ve played on the ground a lot more so we know which way the wind blows and where the ground dips."

Michael Maltby, 16 Po­si­tion: Full back Style: Fast, tall de­fender "We know the ground bet­ter than other teams and we know the pos­i­tives and neg­a­tives of it."

Sam Cor­nish, 16 Po­si­tion: Wing/mid­field Style: Run and carry "Know­ing the ground makes us com­fort­able and will help us re­lax."

Rhys Fuhrmann, 15 Po­si­tion: Mid­field Style: In-and-un­der mid­fielder "We play here all the time so we know the ground well."
