Valleys finding form when it counts
VALLEYS have warmed up for next month’s Proserpine Cricket Association finals with a gritty 23-run win over Warriors.
Batting first at the Kelsey Creek Cricket Grounds on Saturday Valleys found themselves on the back foot early, as Hayden Russell (1/20) and David Vickers (1/22) removed both openers to reduce them to 2/40 from 10 overs.
Greg Dore (17), Dale Mengel (15) and Zane Smith (40) rescued Valleys’ innings before Manny Singh (3/43) accounted for all three batsmen with a smart spell of bowling.
Bryce Fraser rounded out the innings with 3/32 as Valleys finished their allotted overs at 9/148. Like Valleys’ innings, Warriors dug themselves an early hole as Aaron Regan dismissed Chris Don and Hayden Russell in consecutive deliveries.
Warriors’ captain Bryce Fraser and Canecutters import Manny Singh fought back with a solid 80-run partnership, before Valleys’ wicketkeeper shed the gloves for a game-changing spell with the ball.
Michael Hope brought about the end of Fraser (71) and Brett Hansen on the way to tidy figures of 2/38.
Singh (37 not out) continued to hold Warriors’ chase together however he couldn’t find anyone to stay with him.
Regan came back to conclude Warriors’ innings at 125, finishing with tidy figures of 3/ 37.
This weekend Valleys will play Canecutters from 12.30pm at the Kelsey Creek Cricket Grounds.
There are just two more fixtures before finals however all teams are still looking for players.
