THE local outrigger club will host round two of the North Queensland Zone competition this weekend.

Outrigger Whitsunday will host its largest event, with more than 150 paddlers competing across OC1, OC2 and OC6 races, with distances varying from 500m, 6km and marathons of 15km.

Outrigger Whitsunday president Renee Martin said the club was excited about hosting the championships and encouraged the community to attend.

“The open mixed races will be the best spectating race on the day with 19 crews going to the start line – that’s 114 paddlers on the water,” she said.

“The regatta will be held at... Boathaven Beach, allowing for better viewing for spectators and not too much influence from tidal change.”

Senior Outrigger Whitsunday members will compete on Saturday with the juniors scheduled to follow on Sunday.
