THE Whitsunday Football Club’s premier men are one step closer to tackling Brisbane’s best after advancing to the Mackay zone final of the Football Federation Australia (FFA) Cup.

WFC midfielder Lathan Dunn put on a clinic against Crusaders on Saturday night, bagging four goals in the team’s convincing 5-0 victory.

Joel Smith also found the back of the net, as WFC used a three-goal first-half to all but seal the result inside 45 minutes.

On paper the emphatic 5-0 score line appears convincing, but WFC director of football Eric Thompson said the players acknowledged it wasn’t their best effort.

“The most important thing was the result itself because the players understand they didn’t really play well,” he said.

“They got the result and they’re looking to get better which is encouraging for me.”

Saturday’s FFA Cup match against Crusaders was just the club’s third game of the year, so there’s still rust to work through.
