“To be brutally honest we’re still in pre-season mode. It’s going to take time to put different philosophies in play,” Thompson said.

“We need a lot of match practice but in saying that, we haven’t conceded a goal in the last two games and we’ve scored six, which is promising.”

On Saturday WFC will play Magpies, who are coming off a 7-5 win over Wanderers, at the Whitsunday Sportspark from 6.30pm.

Michael Lyall was the star for the winners, miraculously netting six goals on one leg.

Lyall is a known threat in the competition but Thompson said the premier men knew how to contain him.

“We’ve got a plan against him. We’re not ignoring the fact he scored six goals, he scored two against us in the grand final last year so we have to take that on board,” he said.
