Insurance cuts a win for region

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

FOR the first time in a long time, insurance premiums in north Queensland will come down for some homeowners, according to Federal Dawson MP George Christensen.

Mr Christensen said the move by major insurer Suncorp to introduce its own measures to reduce insurance premiums was a major win in the long battle to get a fair deal for those in the north.

The Dawson MP said the insurance package, called Protecting the North, flagged savings of up to 20% on premiums for homes.

Suncorp’s package of initiatives includes savings on strata title insurance.

“I did a lot of work fighting for a fairer deal on strata insurance as well, especially for Airlie Beach residents,” Mr Christensen said.

Margaret Shaw, a Whitsunday woman who has fought for fairer insurance premiums since 2011 and was nominated as Australian of the Year for her efforts, said the move was not enough.

She said given premiums had risen 200%, more than a 20% reduction was needed to make a difference.

“The move is well-intentioned but not quite there yet,” she said.
