Fresh fruit finds the mark

Whitsunday Times - - BUSINESS -

AMILY, fresh fruit and friendly service is what The Prickly Pineapple is all about. Owned and operated by husband and wife team Jamie and Jennifer Fuhrmann, the fruit shop with a difference has been a long time coming.

“I’ve been looking at this, dreaming of this, for 10 years,” Mr Fuhrmann said.

Mr Fuhrmann has worked in the produce industry for 26 years and is now using his in-depth knowledge to great advantage.

“That’s why we can specify what growers or brands we want from my buyer in Brisbane,” he said.

Mrs Fuhrmann’s love of fine foods marries well with the fruit and vegetable business.

The Fuhrmann’s business has turned into a whole family affair, with son Rhys and daughter Georgia both also lending a hand.

On Sunday the business celebrated its first birthday – a little sooner than first planned.

“[Starting the business] probably came a little sooner than we anticipated,” Mrs Fuhrmann said.

“We sort of thought we’d wait until the kids were finished school and we’d go and do our thing, but they’re nearly there too.

“(And) we’ve known for probably 10 years how much of an opportunity was here to do it,” Mr Fuhrmann said.
