Whitsundays set for Duke of Ed program
THE Wild Ones and the Whitsunday PCYC have teamed up to form an exciting new initiative which will lift off tonight.
Nick and Deb Duggan are the new co-ordinators of the Duke of Edinburgh Award for the Whitsunday branch.
An information night will be held today at 5.30pm at the PCYC where parents and participants will get the chance to meet Nick and Deb, who are long-term locals with a wealth of experiences, including turtle tagging on isolated coral cays and volunteering on expeditions to Antarctica.
The Duke of Edinburgh is an international award program for all young people aged 14-25.
Each participant works towards a different award level – bronze, silver or gold – and to do this they must complete four mandatory sections comprising skills, adventurous activity, service and physical recreation.
“The participant gets to choose and plan what activi- ties they want to do and we will also be scheduling activities throughout the year through the PCYC – including camps, hikes and volunteer activities in the community,” Deb said.
“We will be there to answer any questions and talk through planned activities for this term, and to come up with ideas for other group activities.”
In other news, term two has started with a bang for the Wild Ones.
The adventure program kick-started another actionpacked term on April 23 by celebrating their second birthday.
The gang also took part in an inflatable pool party at Proserpine last Saturday.
Tonight the PCYC will host the Wild Ones for team building games from 5.30pm.
