New challenge for Whitsunday
THEY’VE blitzed the early rounds of the Football Federation Australia Cup and now the Whitsunday Football Club is turning its attention to the Northern Club Challenge.
The club’s premier men will host the Townsville Rebels on Saturday night at the Whitsunday Sportspark, hoping to maintain their strong start to the season.
WFC kept its unbeaten streak alive at the weekend with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Mackay Premier League heavyweights Wanderers.
It was billed as one of the matches of the season and it lived up to the hype, with the teams proving inseparable after 90 minutes.
WFC is now second on the Mackay Premier League ladder.
In other results from the weekend, both the MCL and reserves teams posted wins.
The reserves made it two consecutive victories on Saturday in Mackay, downing Wanderers 3-2 in an upset.
Wanderers’ reserves had previously won two of its three matches so far this season but proved no match for WFC.
The club’s MCL team tasted success for the first time this season, romping to an emphatic 6-2 win over Wanderers. Whitsunday had lost its opening two encounters of the year, so Saturday’s fourgoal victory came as a welcome surprise.
The Whitsunday Sportspark will host the Northern Club Challenge match from 7pm. WFC’s MCL outfit will also take the field this weekend, hosting Lions from 4.30pm.
