Riders pull out all stops to win

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

IT WAS a winning weekend for Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club members, with a host of riders putting the foot down at the Zach Mach Adventure Challenge on Sunday in Mackay.

More than 160 athletes of varying fitness levels attended the third annual event, which includes a 30km mountain bike ride, 10km kayak, 11km trail run and a 30km road bike round.

Participants can choose to enter as individuals, in a pair or in a relay. The women’s solo category was hotly contested this year, but ultimately it was Whitsunday’s Chris Labes who pipped Nikki Giles for the win.

Nikki won the female team category at the Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon earlier this month but it was Chris who crossed first in 4.20 hours.

In the solo men’s category, Whitsunday’s Dave Morris finished in 5.02 despite puncturing a tyre on the last leg.

Whitsunday athletes took gold in the pairs’ category for women, with Aimee Sulzberger and Kirsten Legrand clocking 6.29 hours.

The result was even more impressive considering it was Aimee’s maiden multi-sport event.

Father and son duo Fred and Josh Fiedler claimed bronze in the men’s pairs, clocking 4.51 hours.

The next multi-sport event is the Adventurethon on July 4 in Townsville.

WINNER: Chris Labes takes out the female title at the Zach Mach Adventure Challenge in Mackay on Sunday.
