Local bowlers take on the best in Queensland
A MACKAY district team consisting of six Airlie Beach and Proserpine bowlers finished seventh overall at the State District Championships in Noosa.
Shane Spann, Gavin Milne and Mick Kinnear joined forces with Airlie Beach’s Andrew Bell, Armando Isgro and Nathan Harriott for last week’s event, finishing seventh out of 22 teams.
Meanwhile, closer to home, 16 teams took part in the annual Metropole May Day Mixed Fours Carnival at the Proserpine Bowls Club.
Ross Reville, Dot Hinsche, Ben Cutrone and Barry Saroglia won the day with three wins (plus 38), ahead of Nathan Dodds, Todd Leys, Scott Hamilton and Jonathan Bye (three wins plus 34) and Philip Brown, John Henderson, Heather Brown and Wayne Handley (three wins plus 32).
On Sunday morning, the final of the Two Bowl Triples was played where Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton and Wayne Handley eventually overcame Martin Corr, Ben Cutrone (sub) and Scott Kinnear 26-20 in a tense match.
Seven players also enjoyed Mother’s Day bowls.
John Lahney, Fran Porter and Philip Brown defeated Trudy Hanne, Blachne Dalton, Flo O’Hanlon and Heather Brown 18-17 in a social game.
In other news, the teams for this Saturday’s pennants game have been selected.
Division one will play South Suburban, with Scott Kinnear, Ben Cutrone, Michael Kinnear and Barry Saroglia; Shane Kinnear, Scott Hamilton, Wayne Handley and Grahame Kinnear; Nathan Dodds, Jonathan Bye, Gavin Milne and Shane Spann to make-up the teams.
Division five teams include Dan Robinson, Ted Cullen, Shane May and Vince Olsen; John Henderson, Martin Corr, Jim Quod and Ross Reville; Sandy Daffara, Steve Lawrie, Kevin Thorogood and Barry Zillman.
On Wednesday afternoon, Lois Read defeated Heather Brown 25-23 in Club Championships Singles while Jo Peasley/Noelie Dibben (sub) and Barbara Dammash got the better of Lillian Harris and Maree Daffara 18-17 in a Club Championship Pairs game.
Two social games were also played, with Trudy Hanne, Heather Patullo and Dot Hinschen taking the points over Cathy Holmes, Flo O’Hanlon and Joy Jeffries 21-15; Fran Porter, Noelie Dibben/Heather Brown and Joan McGrath outsing Mary Hedgelong, John Lahney and Gail Camm 34-15.
Today two Club Championship Singles games will be played, with Norma Daniels and Lillian Harris to do battle while Maree Daffara and Joan McGrath face off.
