Proserpine product to play for Qld
JUNIOR Brahmans’ product Nathan Barrett has been selected in the Queensland under-16 State of Origin team to play the curtain raiser before Game One in Sydney later this month.
The 16-year-old, who now lives in Townsville to attend Kirwan State High School on a league scholarship, will take to ANZ Stadium on May 27 before the main event.
“I’m ecstatic. I’m over the moon I even got there,” he said.
Nathan is on the comeback trail from shoulder surgery and a series of hand injuries, so the state selection came as a shock to the former Proserpine local.
“I didn’t expect it at all,” he said.
“They’ve picked me at number 17 but I’ll play in the second row and hopefully work my way up to the starting line.”
Nathan hopes to one day represent Australia and Queensland.
Before his state duties, Nathan’s next assignment will be the Cronulla Sharks’ under-16s in the national finals.
Nathan and the Townsville Stingers won the Cyril Connell Cup state final earlier this month, taking care of the Sunshine Coast Falcons to progress through to this weekend’s match.
“We’ve gone through undefeated so this weekend we’re off to the national finals as the best team in Queensland,” he explained.
The news just keeps getting better for Nathan, having signed with the North Queensland Cowboys.
STAR IN THE MAKING: Whitsunday Brahmans’ product Nathan Barrett has been named in the under-15 Queensland White squad to play in Tamworth next month.
