Paddling for glory in Pioneer Bay

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

WHETHER you do it for fun or for fitness, paddlers young and old are invited to participate in the final race of the week-long Whitsunday Stand Up Paddle Challenge on Saturday.

A relative newcomer to racing with a board and paddle, Whitsunday Escape operations manager Wesley Cole is taking part.

“It’ll only be my second race and I am really looking forward to competing against other amateur paddlers right here at home in Airlie Beach,” Mr Cole said.

Market-goers will get a front-row seat to the event, and are encouraged to join the cheer squad.

The race, which features both long and short courses, will start and finish on the sand in front of the markets, with paddlers racing around buoys in Pioneer Bay to determine the overall winner.

“The short course from the beach looks nice and manageable so it should create some good, fair competition. I hope the crowds at the markets enjoy cheering us home,” Mr Cole said.

There will be boards available for hire and registration is open at www.whitsunday supchallenge.com.

Registration includes the race and presentation dinner at Capers on Saturday night.

Competitors need to front up for registration by 11am. The race starts at noon.
