Caught without a licence after 20 yrs
DANIEL Robert Nicholas hasn’t renewed his licence in more than 20 years but the law has finally caught up with him.
The 43-year-old appeared before Proserpine Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with driving without a licence and contravening a direction.
On April 28 at 4.44pm police pulled over a Ford Falcon sedan on Faust St, Proserpine.
When asked for his licence, Nicholas said he didn’t have his wallet on him, before eventually stating the name “Adam John Nicholas”.
He was subsequently arrested when checks revealed such a person didn’t exist, despite it actually being his brother’s name.
Nicholas, who told the court he had circumnavigated the country several times, said he hadn’t renewed his licence for 23 years.
“You had a licence for about six months how long ago?” magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist asked. “When I was 20,” he replied. Nicholas was fined $220 for contravening police orders and $330 for driving unlicensed.
“Imagine how much money you would’ve saved on licence renewals over the years,” Mr Stjernqvist mused.
