Driver gearing up for Phillip Island
A WHITSUNDAY local will put himself to the test at one of the country’s most historic motorsport venues.
Wayne Udy will take part in round two of the Australian GT series this weekend at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The Whitsunday local was asked to co-drive with Ben Foessel of the Motor School racing team from Brisbane.
The race is a 101 lap enduro race with some of the biggest names in motorsport, including Garth Tander, Steve Johnson, Steve Richards, Will Davidson and Warren Luff.
“(Foessel) gave me a call and I wasn’t going to say no,” Udy explained.
“I won a championship last year so I proved I’m reliable. I think they were after some- one who’s consistent and who won’t do much damage.
“It’s a good start seeing as Townsville (round three) will be my next race and I’ll meet all the guys who I’ll be racing with.”
Udy will drive a V8 Ginetta G50Z British supercar this weekend, the experience preparing him for his main goal – round three of the Australian GT series in Townsville.
Not only will this weekend’s race be a good lead-up event for Udy, it will also be a chance to learn alongside a well-travelled driver.
“(Foessel) is from Brisbane. He won the championship for his class in the Australian GT so he has a fair bit of experience,” Udy said.
“Anytime in the seat you learn. This is my first time on Phillip Island so it will be good to be with someone who knows what they’re doing.”
