Trashbags take on Mother’s Day derby
Skaters from the Whitsunday Roller Derby League’s Trashbags joined other skaters from Central Queensland in an exhibition bout to celebrate Mother’s Day in Townsville.
Teams were split based on whether the women were mothers or non-mothers, with the former group branded with the team name The Rolling Pin-ups. The non-mothers’ team was known as Dodgers. Local mums Brett “Crystal Brawl” Piccinelli, Lucy “Dr Lucid” Sawyer and Christine “Boss in Boots” Cleary all skated for the Rolling Pin-ups and helped bring home the win.
With the year’s biggest tournament around the corner in June, this was valuable experience both with and against some of the skaters from teams that are competing in the tournament, according to club secretary Lucy Sawyer.
“We all took home some valuable knowledge for the upcoming tournament on the Queen’s Birthday weekend,” Lucy said.
“One of our newest skaters, Pedro Gearin, will be officiating and being a team manager for us at the tournament too. He has been taking every opportunity to do as much derby as he can between now and then. Pedro is going to be a great asset as a player on our co-ed team and to the league in general.”
