Martial artists get a taste of the action
Whitsunday Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan held its 10th Inter-Club Tournament on Saturday.
Students from both the Proserpine and Cannonvale clubs came together to compete in the technical and sparring (fighting) divisions.
All students were encouraged to participate as they would be competing against their fellow club members and the sparring was “light body contact only”.
The Inter-Club Tournaments are designed to allow students to put into practice the skills they have learned without the ‘full contact’ aspect of a regular tournament.
It is also designed to give students a feel for what it is like to be in a competition situation, be it sparring or technical, should they decide to participate in a higher level tournament.
The events were judged by head instructor fifth dan black belt Vicky Gillam, who was assisted on the day by second dan instructor Jim Hodges and first dan black belts Zac Maynard and Nick Marsionis.
There were some awesome displays of technical skill in the self-defence, jumping front kick and poomsae events and the sparring results were superb – especially from those students who participated in their first tournament.
“The female yellow tiger fighters were quite a sight to see. As were some of the blue and red belts – they were simply ferocious,” Vicky Gillam said.
“All up it was a great day for both competitors and spectators alike.”
Whitsunday Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan has training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays in Proserpine and in Cannonvale on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more details call Vicky on 0416 350 439.
