Change is in the air for our Local Government divisions

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE Whitsundays is growing and the numbers for our Local Government divisions no longer add up.

If you live in Cannonvale you’re part of the fastest growing division and if you live in Airlie Beach you’re not much further behind.

Whitsunday Regional Council’s CEO Scott Waters said the six Whitsunday divi- sion were designed to have a median number of 3396 electors in each but that Cannonvale or Division 2, was now “over quota quite considerably”.

“And this happens – we’re not the only Local Government area to experience growth,” he explained. The question is what we now do about it.

At yesterday’s Council meeting in Collinsville, Council resolved to recommend that new divisional boundaries were instated. The motion was carried narrowly, with Crs Whitney, Clifford, Collins and Atkinson for it and Crs Clark, Willcox and Ramage against. Submissions can be made to the electoral commission until June 5.

CHANGING LINES: Deputy Mayor Andrew Willcox held an information session for his electors on Monday morning.
