Fundraiser brings local family hope
WHEN Ethan Davis played on the jumping castle at Airlie’s Club Croc Hotel on Sunday, only the feeding tube taped to his face revealed the struggles this two and-a-half year-old has faced.
For the whole of his short life to date, Ethan has been battling a rare disorder called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), further complicated by a premature birth and feeding difficulties resulting in failure to thrive.
It was earlier this year that Ethan’s mother Tiffany Enkelman reached out to the community for help and on Sunday the community once again answered that call. About $700 was raised through the Club Croc Airlie Beach Family Fun Day, with a further $600 from the online auction of tickets to the Great Moscow Circus over the weekend.
Speaking to the small crowd who braved the rain for the event, Ms Enkelman’s gratitude to “our wonderful community” was evident. “These people have changed my perspective, given me hope and faith and made me believe there is always something I can do,” she said, paying special tribute to Club Croc manager Nathan Robinson and the team at Airlie Amusements for their part in the fundraising day.
On Tuesday, Ethan was admitted to a hospital in Brisbane where he will undergo surgery to insert a permanent feeding device. Money raised on Sunday and at further events will go towards the costs associated with this and other medical needs.
An online auction with prizes such as accommodation, a reef trip and a three-day pass to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is now planned, as well as a dog-wash fundraiser on June 14. Fundraiser organiser Wendy Downes OAM, said it was important for the community to keep up the fight for the family’s cause. “This is something that’s going to be ongoing for quite a long time – he’s not going to suddenly get better,” she said.
