ABELL Point Yacht Club members are poised and ready for one of the highlights of their calendar year – the Coral Coast Rally and Race.
The rally leaves Airlie Beach for Magnetic Island next Tuesday, June 2 but this year’s race won’t go ahead.
APYC spokesperson Luke McCaul said a healthy number of vessels would be taking part in the 2015 rally “and that is looking like it will have a great fleet”.
“The race has been cancelled due to a lack of interest, however the rally is shaping up to be bigger than the past seven years,” he said.
The event started as the Dent to Dunk Race in 2005 but after Cyclone Yasi decimated Dunk Island in 2011 it was reinvented in its current format as a race and rally to Magnetic Island from 2012.
Participants sail a total distance of about 130 nautical miles, with the rally breaking this into four legs.
Power boats have been welcomed to the rally in previous years and with the Abell Point Yacht Club’s broadening membership now covering both power and sail, it is hoped that participation from this sector will increase. Mr McCaul said the combination of power and sail vessels would only add another dimension to the event.
This year’s rally begins with registration and briefing at Sorrento on Monday, June 1, with legs to Cape Gloucester, Cape Upstart and Cape Bowling Green to follow. The fleet will then converge on Magnetic Island’s Horseshoe Bay before relocating to the Nellie Bay marina for the final rendezvous.
Entry costs $120 per rally boat. For more information visit the website www.apyc.yachting.org.au.
