Bronze for Outrigger club in Townsville
Outrigger Whitsunday has returned from Townsville with a third for their overall performance as well as a host of individual achievements.
The club contested the Magnetic Island Regatta at the start of the month, the third in a six-race grand prix.
Overall Whitsunday finished third of 11 clubs, but the stars of the show were Courtney Joyce and Ashleigh Suchanek, who recorded gold medals in the OC2 open women short course marathon.
It was a brilliant achievement for the teenagers as this was the first time the girls had competed in the open division.
The two girls backed up their stunning open division debuts at the junior regatta the following day, returning a host of medals.
Other notable performances from the weekend went to Ashton Joyce and Varnia Earnst, who won silver in the under-14 OC2 short course marathon, and Brook Draper for her second in the under-16 OC1 short course marathon.
Brook also teamed-up with Yemi Earnst for silver in the under-19 OC2 short course event.
“Outrigger Whitsunday is certainly representing our region well at these regattas with more and more bling coming home each time,” club spokesperson Nicholas Bellinger said.
