Whitsunday Weightlifting Club members continued to impress with a series of strong performances in Mackay on Saturday.

The club members dominated round two of the JME Queensland Club Challenge series, with many notching personal bests on their way to top-three finishes.

Emily Hinschen, Lily Poles and Emily Poles starred in the under-15 female division, taking out the top three spots while club-mate Chelsea Nicoll won the under-21 female event.

Matthew Warren claimed gold in the under-21 male division while fellow Whitsunday lifted Corey Smith, who is now ranked third in Australia for his division, collected bronze.

In the senior categories, Laiton Frisk won the men’s title while Gabbi McNeill was top female, just ahead of clubmate Chelsea Bolitho.

Whitsunday club coach Leanne Knox was thrilled with the results and said she hoped her charges would build on their efforts at the upcoming national youth and masters titles.

“I’m really happy with everyone’s progress,” she said.

“Most of the lifters got a PB on at least one of their lifts which is great.

“I was also happy with the amount of lifters we had. I think there were 25 in the competition and I think 16 of those were our lifters.”

Club members Kia Taylor, Laiton Frisk and Charlie Wilson each made their competitive weightlifting debuts on Saturday and Knox is hoping to attract more competitors as the fledgling club looks to cement its reputation as one of the best in the state.

The club is currently ranked in the top three in the JME-sponsored series and a first-place finish will deliver new equipment, a major boost for a club that formed just over a year go.

Meanwhile, Knox has been named assistant coach for the Queensland team ahead of the youth national titles to be held in Brisbane next month.

“This is a great privilege and learning opportunity as I will be working with some of Australia’s best coaches,” she said.
