MP is determined to tackle ice
FEDERAL Member for Dawson George Christensen has announced he will hold round table discussions about methylamphetamine or “ice” issues in the district.
In Parliament this week, Mr Christensen said he’d received a “disturbing letter” from Whitsunday mayor Jennifer Whitney about an “astounding and gravely concerning increase in the use of drugs, particularly ice” at the Bowen State High School.
Mr Christensen said reports, obtained by the school, insinuated drugs were being given cost free and used by a wide range of community members including students.
“(And) as if to substantiate those claims, 100 raids across Mackay and the Whitsundays on the weekend netted more than $1 million in drugs, with 57 arrests made,” Mr Christensen said.
The round table discussions will be held in Mackay on Friday, June 13 from 10.30am-12.30pm at the Mackay Regional Council reception room and at the Girudala Hall in Bowen on Saturday, June 13 from 10.30am-12.30pm.
Anyone who has been impacted personally by the drug ice and who would like to attend is asked to phone Mr Christensen’s office on 4944 0662.
CONCERN: Ice is a growing concern in the Whitsundays.
