Water quality in need of boost
WITH the Whitsundays and Cairns receiving roughly the same amount of tourist visitation for the 2013-14 financial year and the trend set to continue or increase, Whitsunday Charter Boat Industry Association president Tony Brown said it was time for the Whitsundays to receive its fair share of water quality improvement funding.
Citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Mr Brown said the Whitsundays had seen a 45% decrease in water quality over the last decade.
“Roughly 65% of (water quality improvement) funding has gone north of Townsville,” Mr Brown said.
“We’re pretty much even in the number of visitations to Cairns for (the 2013/14 financial year) and we suspect we’ll be pretty much on track to be equal to Cairns in this next financial year ending this June.
“So if we’ve provided that much return to the economy, it’s really important that our water quality gets sufficient funding to really address the problems (here).”
