Force behind our sporting grounds
HE’S a modest man who has left extraordinary footprints on the community and on Saturday night, Peter Chengody celebrated his 50th birthday at KC’s Bar and Grill.
While there were tales of Peter’s career in rugby union and cute baby photos, it was clear the younger community needed to know more about his role in the creation of Whitsunday Sportspark.
Back in the day, the sports ground was a dump where Peter learned to drive.
He said a meeting in 1989 at the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre got the ball rolling on turning it into a sporting park.
By 1991 Peter was chair of the Whitsunday Sportspark and by 1993 the fields were created thanks to a grant. Lights, an AFL ground, change rooms and additional lights came in the next five years and there are many who say Peter was a driving force behind it all.
