Bolstered Magpies take down WFC

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

FOOTBALL: Strengthened by first choice Mackay Premier League players, the Magpies proved too strong for Whitsunday Football Club’s reserves on Saturday.

Magpies recorded a 5-2 win at the Whitsunday Sportspark with the help of the club’s topline players.

Magpies’ premier men’s team did not have a game on the weekend, which meant the club could bolster the reserves team.

“Fair enough. The rules have changed this year so that they can do that and they did,” reserves’ captain Anthony Nobilia said.

“We would’ve done the same.”

WFC trailed 2-1 at half-time before Magpies’ star players found their rhythm.

“You could tell the difference because the quality was clearly there,” Nobilia said.

“We had a few fringe players playing in the reserves as well but we were evenly matched going into the second half.

“We looked the goods at 2-2 but after 90 minutes the experience ... just took its toll.”

Despite the three-goal loss Nobilia encouraged the reserves to hold their heads high.

“We had our best team on and we were competing with a stack of quality players. I’m happy with the performance,” he said. “We can take that as a positive.”

The win drops WFC’s reserves back to second on the ladder behind Magpies, but only on goal difference.

In other results the MCL team went down to Magpies 2-0.

WFC’s MCL team have three out of its seven games this season and currently sits in fifth position.

There are no games this weekend due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
