CQ honours for three Ea­gles

Three Whit­sun­day Sea Ea­gles have been se­lected in the Cen­tral Queens­land squad af­ter dom­i­nat­ing the North Queens­land Academy Cham­pi­onships in Air­lie Beach over the week­end.

Mitch Healey, Jake Kennedy and Lach­lan Matthews joined three other Mackay play­ers in the CQ squad which will con­test the Un­der-14 State Cham­pi­onships later this year.

AFL Queens­land re­gional manager Jeff Neu­mann said he was de­lighted the re­gion’s tal­ent was recog­nised.

“To have three play­ers from the Sea Ea­gles is credit to the way that par­tic­u­lar foot­ball club goes about their player devel­op­ment,” he said.

“Six in to­tal is a great re­sult and with the State Academy Cham­pi­onships not un­til Septem­ber a few more Mackay play­ers could get the call up.”

Nine Sea Ea­gles were picked in the Mackay team that played four games at the Whit­sun­day Sportspark on Satur­day and Sun­day.

Jay­den Clark, Xan­der Hall, Cal­lum McMurdo, Lo­gan Mil­li­gan, Alex Shultz, Mitch Healey, Jake Kennedy, Lach­lan Matthews and Mackay co-cap­tain Max Cor­nish led the team to one win for the week­end.

In game one Mackay went down to Townsville 8.7.55-1.3.9 de­spite the best ef­forts of Lach­lan and Max while Mitch was in the thick of the ac­tion for game two against Capri­cor­nia, lead­ing Mackay to a 4.5.29-3.5.23 win.

Xan­der and Max fin­ished the game with one goal each.

Game three on Sun­day re­sulted in a 15.12.102 to 1.0.6 loss to Cairns where Mitch was again named in the best play­ers.

The fourth and fi­nal fix­ture saw Cape York win a thriller, with Mackay fall­ing 4.3.275.5.29.

In other rep­re­sen­ta­tive foot­ball news, Whit­sun­day Sea Ea­gle Eli Gun­ders has helped the Mackay Crows win the Tri-Se­ries Shield.

The 17-year-old key po­si­tion player con­trib­uted to wins over Capri­cor­nia and Townsville on Satur­day at Har­rup Park.

In game one Mackay won 5.7.37 to Capri­cor­nia’s 4.4.28 be­fore back­ing-up against Townsville later that day.

The sec­ond match was a com­fort­able victory for Mackay, run­ning out 11.2.68 to 3.3.21 win­ners.

Mackay’s women’s team also won its Tri-Se­ries com­pe­ti­tion, win­ning by 17 and 47 points over Capri­cor­nia and Townsville re­spec­tively.
