QLD nod for two Brahmans

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

From Proserpine to the North Queensland Marlins, two Whitsunday Brahmans have been picked in the Queensland Rangers team.

Phil Ramage and Grant Cooke were selected in the 18man squad to play the Ron Massey Cup against New South Wales in Coffs Harbour on July 18.

“I’m very proud and honoured to wear the Queensland jersey again,” Ramage said.

Not only will the two Brahmans wear the Maroon colours next month, they also helped the North Queensland Marlins to the Queensland Rugby League A-Divisional title over the weekend.

The team played South East and South Queensland on the Gold Coast on Saturday and Sunday, winning 3210 and 36-18.

“In the first half on Saturday our forwards really dominated their forwards... which made our (the backs) job a lot easier,” Ramage explained.

“The game opened up in the back end of the first and second halves.” Arguably the highlight of the weekend came on Sunday, when Cooke, not known for his speed, produced a stunning 80m inter- cept try. “I didn’t know he could run that quick. He got the intercept and I thought ‘I better start running cause he’ll get caught’,” Ramage said.

Overall, Ramage praised Cooke’s carnival and said he was a more than deserving selection in the state team.

“He was selected in the run-on (for Queensland) but started from the bench (for North Queensland),” Ramage said. “When he came on in the second game on Sunday our fullback had popped his shoulder, so Cooke came on at centre. His one-on-one defence is the best I’ve ever seen. I rate his defence highly and I’m glad I’m playing with him and not against him. He’s got perfect technique.”

In other news, this weekend the Brahmans will celebrate sponsors’ day at Les Stagg Oval.

Whitsunday will host Brothers hoping to make amends for a surprise drawn game last time they faced the competition’s sixth ranked team.

Whitsunday was expected to win the round three clash but the team was forced to share the spoils with a spirited Brothers.

The Brahmans are fifth on the Auscoal Super A-grade ladder having drawn three, won three and lost three games so far this season.
