From fisher to cover model for Whitsunday deckhand
RENEGADE Fishing Charters deckhand Tom Teys has gone from local fisherman to front page model.
The deckie’s boss snapped a quick shot of Mr Teys holding an impressive wahoo while out on the water with Renegade.
Little did the avid angler know his face would soon be seen all over the state on the front cover of Queensland Fishing Monthly for the month of June.
Mr Teys said “it was pretty good” to get chosen for the front cover, but he wasn’t taking it too seriously.
“It was a bit of a laugh at the time,” he said.
“All my family’s gone and bought copies, so they all love it.”
Renegade co-owner Luke Griffiths submitted the photo as part of his monthly write-up in the magazine, with the publication quickly snapping up the shot to be their face for the month.
“They sent an email back saying they really liked the photo and asked if we would mind having it on the front cover,” Mr Teys said.
For Mr Teys though, the fish was more impressive than having his face on the front.
“Luke took the photo and sent it in and that was pretty much the end of it,” he said.
“It was a pretty good fish, we were pretty stoked we got it.”
Despite his newfound fame, Mr Teys said he has no plans to take the leap into celebrity fishing.
“I’m happy just working and doing what I’m doing, it’s a pretty good job,” he said.
“I don’t think I’ll become a celebrity any time soon.”
